The Chevra Kadisha of Congregation Shearith Israel is a group of synagogue members that prepares the deceased through a ritual called Taharah, or purification.  The treatment of the deceased is governed by the principle of kavod ha met, respect for the body.  Serving on the Chevra Kadisha has been an honor throughout Jewish history. The men and women of Chevra Kadisha work in teams to perform Taharah while reciting prayers from the Torah, Prophets and the Song of Songs.

New members are welcome and receive appropriate training.
