MLK Community-wide Days of Service: January 12 - 15

All Day for 3 Days

There is a lot going on at Shearith Israel for MLK Weekend 2024 and we hope you’ll join us. Shearith Israel For Good has planned some meaningful service opportunities, a special justice-themed discussion on Shabbat and will be collecting books throughout the month. SERVICE PROJECTS:

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12: 9 AM - 1 PM [INTOWN CARES]

Help unpack and inventory food for the weekend food pantry run by Intown Cares. Must be 11+ years old and able to stand, and possibly lift up to 30 lbs. Space is limited. To register email Aaron Chaiken at amchaiken@gmail.com. 

SUNDAY, JANUARY 14: 9 AM - 11:30 AM [MACHANEH SHAI]

Machaneh Shai families will gather on Sunday, January 14 to work on service projects including making sandwiches for local nonprofit The Sandwich Project, creating cards for isolated seniors, putting together appreciation notes for teachers at local schools and making pine cone bird feeders to support birds during the winter months. More details will be emailed to Machaneh Shai families.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 14: 12 PM - 1 PM [BACKPACK BUDDIES]

Join Backpack Buddies to assemble backpacks for food insecure students at local schools. All ages are welcome. Limited spots available. Register here.

MONDAY, JANUARY 15: 10 AM - 12 PM [REPAIR THE WORLD]

Organize food at the Toco Hills Community Alliance for distribution at local mobile pantries with Repair the World Atlanta. Must be 14+ years old. Register here.


 

COMMUNITY LEARNING & BOOK DRIVE:

SHABBAT, JANUARY 13: AFTER KIDDUSH (~12:45 PM)

Join Rabbi Helfand and other community leaders for a discussion about the Jewish perspectives on justice and service. Gather after Shabbat Kiddush in Zimmerman Hall.

ONGOING, JANUARY 2ND - 20TH: BOOK DRIVE

Donate new books or books in great condition throughout January. Books will be donated to Children Read, a local nonprofit that collects and distributes early-learner books to low-income preschool children. Look for the collection bin in the synagogue lobby.
