Tallit-Making Workshop

Sunday, January 8, 2023 15 Tevet 5783

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

You're invited to join Sisterhood as we explore the mitzvot of tzizit, sefirot, color theory, and the opportunity to make your own spiritually purposeful and authentic tallit — for yourself, your daughter, or to donate to the CSI rack — just in time for Sisterhood Shabbat on January 21! Register below by Friday, December 16.

Most Shearith Israel women did not grow up wearing a tallit, but since our synagogue requires anyone approaching the Torah to wear one, there is always a demand for tallitot (plural) that are smaller or better suited for women. In fact, this workshop was inspired by a group of mothers who are preparing for their children's upcoming b'nai mitzvah and don't have a tallit of their own. Girls in grades 5-7 (or older) are welcome, and Sisterhood membership is not required but always encouraged.

The workshop is being organized and team-taught by some dynamic CSI women: educator Erin Chernow, sewing maven Annie D'Agostino, designer Jaime Sherman Wender, and textile artist Ruth Simon McRae, whose tallitot (they're for sale!) are displayed in galleries and museums.

No sewing experience is needed. There is a $36 materials fee to cover the cost of fabric and kosher tzizit (which you'll learn to knot yourself) as well as instruction and light refreshments.  Payments can be made directly to Sisterhood. You may bring a check or cash with you that day, or pay via Zelle @ CSISisterhood2019@gmail.com or PayPal @ paypal.me/CSISisterhood.

To ensure we have purchased and prepared enough fabric, YOU MUST REGISTER BELOW by Friday, December 16, 2022. For questions, please contact Erin Chernow at erinchernow@gmail.com

Sorry, Registration has ended.
