Hineini: Here I am at Shearith Israel

Who are you? (Really?)

The objective of these questions is for Shearith Israel to get to know you more.
They aren't perfect questions, and the answers probably won't fit you exactly.

That's why your answers are simply the first step before a follow-up conversation that you'll schedule right when you're done.

You are not anonymous in this congregation.  We intend to use this information about you to better accomplish our mission of connecting you to meaningful living through Judaism.

Your answers will not be shared outside of CSI professionals and select lay leaders of the congregation.

Mission:
Congregation Shearith Israel connects people to meaningful living through Judaism.

Vision:
Our congregation is rooted in Conservative Judaism and committed to egalitarianism.  Relationships are at the center of everything we do: we educate children and adults in Jewish values, Hebrew language and the continuing story of our people; we elevate our spirits and feel God's presence through prayer experiences; we embrace our covenantal responsibility to comfort all who are suffering, and celebrate each other's joy.

Relationships are at the center of everything we do

We are committed to connecting you to Shearith Israel community.  These questions will help us understand your interests and connect you to other Shearith folk who share them.
Torah

We educate children and adults in Jewish values, Hebrew language, and the continuing story of our people.

For the purposes of this form, we are interested in your self-perception of engagement with learning at Shearith Israel.  During this pandemic, everything is rapidly changing.  We are interested in how you see yourself engaged now and also how you hope to be engaged in the future.
Community-led learning are programs like "Synagogue Scholars and Authors," organized and led by Shearith Israel members.
Machaneh Shai is our religious school for K-7.  If you have children enrolled in this program, their learning may be a large part of your engagement with the congregation.
Regular adult education classes are topical classes offered weekly or monthly by CSI staff or hired professionals.
Scholars-in-Residence are typically brought from out of town for an intensive weekend of learning and community at CSI.

Prayer

We elevate our spirits and feel God's presence through prayer experiences.

For the purposes of this form, we are interested in your self-perception of engagement with prayer at Shearith Israel.  During this pandemic, everything is rapidly changing.  We are interested in how you see yourself engaged now, and also how you hope to be engaged in the future.
"Engagement" in this context means your likelihood to attend, and the meaning you derive from the experience when you do.
Other spiritual experiences include current offerings like Minyan Shelanu, Mishmar Ruach, and Minyan Ohalecha.  This questions also includes spiritual experiences that might emerge in the future. Imagine meditation, singing circles, experimenting with English, all alternative models of Jewish spiritual engagement.

Gemilut Chasidim

We embrace our covenantal responsibility to comfort all who are suffering, and celebrate each other's joy.

Gemilut Chasadim is how we care for another and the world.  For the purposes of this form, we are interested in your self-perception of engagement with Gemilut Chasadim at Shearith Israel.  During this pandemic, everything is rapidly changing.  We are interested in how you see yourself engaged now, and also how you hope to be engaged in the future.
Chesed Committee sends meals to mourners, checks in on sick and lonely members, and cares for members.
