Tefillin Challenge & Bulk-Purchasing Form

In order to encourage the mitzvah of tefillin, Congregation Shearith Israel will provide a pair of tefillin to CSI teenagers becoming B’nai Mitzvah who agree to participate in the Tefillin Challenge by:
  • attending a program of study to learn the significance and halacha of tefillin organized by CSI, and
  • laying tefillin in at least ten daily shacharit minyanim at CSI during the six months following being called to Torah as a bar or bat mitzvah.
Teenagers who previously became B’nai Mitzvah at CSI are welcome to participate in the Tefillin Challenge this year.

Adult members of CSI who wish to do so may purchase tefillin from the shul at the shul’s cost.

B’nai Mitzvah and teens interested in participating in the Tefillin Challenge, as well as other members interested in purchasing tefillin as part of our bulk purchase, should complete the form below before February 17.

Please direct any questions to our Religious Life Committee Chair, Baruch Stiftel at baruch.stiftel@gmail.com or 404.422.0822.
We have two types available. Each pair consists of a rosh (head) and yad (arm/hand) box with straps.
  1. Peshutim Mehudarim ($455 per pair) — solidly built with several pieces of goat's or sheep's hide glued together, with strong walls which should hold its square shape for many years
  2. Gassot Tefillin ($860 per pair) —  highest quality, made from a single piece of cow's hide. Intended to last a lifetime with proper care.
Illustrations of the parchment can be provided for those who wish to see them in advance of ordering.
Tefillin are made differently in these traditional practices. Most of our congregation follow Ashkenazic tradition.
