Shavuot
Shavuot
A harvest festival in ancient Palestine, the two-day Shavuot holiday begins 49 omer days after the start of Pesach and is celebrated as the anniversary of the receiving of the Torah at Sinai with (for some: all-night) learning. As the Israelites refrained from eating meat in the days prior to receiving the law, we favor dairy foods on Shavuot. As if at Sinai, we stand in synagogue when the Aseret ha’Dibrot (Ten Statements or Commandments) are read aloud; Yizkor prayers are recited on the second day of the festival.
Shavuot 5784 will be observed Tuesday night, June 11th - Thursday night, June 13th, 2024. Yizkor will be recited during Yom Tov morning services on June 13th at approximately 11 am.
TIKKUN LEYL SHAVUOT / SHAVUOT NIGHT OF LEARNING: TueSDAY, june 11th, 6PM - MIDNIGHT
theme: sinai & zion
Join us for a special Shavuot night of learning as we enjoy a dairy dinner and learn from Shearith Israelites and the greater Atlanta Jewish community members on topics related to Sinai and Jerusalem, revelation and our practice of Jewish traditions, and the war in Israel and Gaza.
The night will feature Ken Stein, Professor Emeritus of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Political Science, and Israeli Studies at Emory, Geoff Levin, Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and Jewish Studies and core faculty member at the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies at Emory and author of the new book Our Palestine Question: Israel and American Jewish Dissent, 1948-1978, Eli Sperling, Israel Institute Teaching Fellow in the University of Georgia’s Department of International Affairs and author of the new book Singing the Land: Hebrew Music and Early Zionism in America, and Emily Kaiman, J Street's Deputy Director of Jewish Communal Engagement, and CSI's own former summer rabbinic intern Rabbi Sammy Rosenbaum. Each of these presenters will lead their own, separate session as well.
Additional sessions will be led by Rabbis Kaiman, Helfand, and Ilan Schwartz.
Registration for Shavuot dinner has now closed, but all are welcome to services and the learning sessions throughout the night!
